Legacy - Wellington's Urban Hip Hop Dance CrewSaturday 21 March 2009. Time to be confirmed. The pulse and beat of these dozen fighting fit performers brings the kamikaze energy of street dance into the theatre. Their synchronized moves match every beat from the box, and they manage to make that look easy. Don't be fooled.
In 2006, Legacy qualified for the finals of the World Championships, held that year in Los Angeles. Since then, Legacy have performed to over 45,000 people in New Zealand through sold-out shows A Hip Hop Legacy and they were also awarded Best Newcomers and Highly Commended Dance Show at the 2008 New Zealand Fringe Festival. These guys are class come and see for yourself in The square Palmerston North. Mamaku ProjectSaturday 21 March 2009. Time to be confirmed. The Mamaku Project is born from the meeting of two French-NewZealander artists in 2004 at the Errobiko Festival in the Basque Country (France). Tui Mamaki, evocative voice, over multi-lingual poetry, calls Monsieur E., Parisian musician and NZ expat. This experience started a desire, sketches and a sound aesthetic…
In 2006, they co-produce their first LP “Karekare” which received critical acclaim and sales of +3000 in NZ. Concoction weaving French quirkiness, GypsyPacifica and scents of fine ElectroOriental-Jazz. Created in the breathtaking wilderness of West-coast Aotearoa, this one-of-a-kind poetry rides infectious earthy grooves with a sprinkling of circus… Linking peoples, landscapes and languages with their unique and festive style. The Mamaku Project have been making waves in the NZ Arts/Music Festival scene “I have been utterly seduced… a smart, slightly sassy, supremely confident and utterly engaging album.” **** Graham Reid - NZ Herald/ Elsewhere HikoikoiSaturday 21 March 2009. Time to be confirmed. Hikoikoi are an original conscious reggae group based in Petone, whose sound is currently spreading through the hearts and minds of Aotearoa. Hikoikoi have played many stages in the last three years including appearances at the Parihaka Peace Festival, Cuba Street Carnival and the Jackson Street Festival. Together Hikoikoi creates a soul infused groove and righteous rhythm perfect for a sunny afternoon in The Square.
Hikoikoi's original sound is a marriage of skill and passion portraying an organic fusion of earthy beats and grooves and lots of harmonic interplay. Their jazz flavoured beats create a twist of Reggae, Dub and electronica, difficult to stand still to!! A group not to be missed. Alexey MedvedevSaturday 21 March 2009. Time to be confirmed. Alexey emigrated from Moscow to New Zealand and displays an amazing versatility and combination of styles and genre that can include the piano, guitar and balalaika.
Alexey Medvedev, is an extremely talented Russian musician and guitarist with a unique, fast percussive finger picking style that has amazed southern Kiwi audiences in Dunedin, the Whare Flat and the Whitestone Folk Festivals, in Christchurch, Oamaru, the West Coast and many more.
But it’s not only Alexey's wide range of styles that makes listeners feel privileged, it’s also Alexey’s unique touché. Whenever they hear his rendition of well-known tunes the way Alexey touches the strings of his Martin guitar, it makes listeners feel relaxed, almost as though they were receiving special hypnotherapeutic treatment
One not to be missed also playing in Café Culture 22 March 2009. Venue to be advised.
